Argentina's two-time French Open semi-finalist David Nalbandian faces a fight to be fit for this year's renewal as he is struggling with a hip injury.

The 27-year-old was thumped 6-2, 6-2 by Chile's Paul Capdeville at the ATP tournament on Monday, with Nalbandian frustrated after hurting his hip little more than a week ago in Barcelona.

All he can do now prior to a possible start next Monday at the new Madrid Masters on clay is undergo more physio.

"I'll do my best to try and play in Paris," he said.

"The injury still bothers me. I have to keep working on getting better. My preparation coming to Estoril was as good as possible but limited due to my ongoing injury."

Venus struggles to make next round
Fourth seed Venus Williams was made to work hard by Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic to reach the third round of the Italian Open in Rome.

Williams looked to be on course for an easy win after taking the first set 6-2 before her opponent hit back to take the second set 6-4. But Williams recovered to win the deciding set 6-2.

Also in the second round, sixth seed Victoria Azarenka, of Belarus, defeated Japan's Ayumi Morita of Japan who had lost the opening set 6-0 when she retired.
